Translated from Latin, it means "From many, one" or "Out of many, one." It referred to the integration of the 13 independent colonies into one united country, and has taken on additional meaning, given the pluralistic nature of American society. The motto was selected
by the first Great Seal committee in 1776, at the beginning of the American
Revolution. It suggests to me that the president is to represent ALL
the people of the United States. To do that, he must listen to all.
It is not his privilege to command or manage them, nor to get direction
