U.P. Riders Horse Bowl Teams
Last year, our U.P. Riders competitors were the first group in three years from Marquette county to attend the regional Horse Bowl competition held at Crystal Falls High School. We had one junior team of five players, and two senior individuals that competed after studying information for only three weeks! Playing against teams that had been studying for about six months, our team placed fourth out of five and our individuals held their own as well. This year, I am pleased to introduce two awesome junior teams and a senior team that are really ready to hit the buzzers this year. The teams have met four times since December and are meeting once a week during January and February to prepare for the competition. The groups have assigned a horse "category" per week and have been studying very hard. The studying seems to be paying off. At our last meet, they seem to have mastered the sections and showed amazing reflexes on the buzzer. Parents read the questions, and we got to try out our very own buzzer and timer system (article below.) Watch out teams at Horse Bowl, we're ready for you! |

Note about being a Senior: After studying the Junior questions for only three weeks last year, I can't imagine how the Senior individuals survived with that short amount of study time. The Senior Horse Bowl questions are much more extensive than the Junior's, with thick resource books and tons of material to learn and memorize. I couldn't imagine having these questions on my first Horse Bowl competition, but all three of my teammates have done exactly that. If you are a junior, and are interested in Horse Bowl, it is a lot easier to learn the process as a Junior and then move up. I am having a lot of fun learning all the information and studying with my group, and I can't wait for us to try our hand at this year's regional Horse Bowl competition. This time, we are ready to take on those teams. I think we have the potential of doing really well, and we're having fun with it all! |

Last year our U.P. Riders Horse Bowl team was not able to get the set of buzzers that was available so we could practice our "speedy responses," but this year there is a new solution. RiLee W. and her dad have been working like mad scientists with electrical gadgets of all sorts and have created a home-made, but totally professional buzzer system. It has four hand held buttons, just like the ones used at the Horse Bowl competitions. It includes all the required timers and even chimes when the time is expired. RiLee had a lot of fun helping her dad make it, and said she "likes working with wires." The teams tried out this new buzzer at the last meeting, and it worked just as planned. Having a buzzer system to practice on is a big advantage so that our teams can develop a quick hand on the button and learn to answer questions within the timers and scoring limits. I think that after working with the buzzers, our team will be super ready to show all that they know at the end of February. |
