State Horse Bowl Champions!

RiLee W., Nick G., Clara C., Cassidy C., Emily B. and Emme K.
After being undefeated at the 4-H U.P. Regional Horse Bowl Competition, team members RiLee W., Emily B., Clara C., and Cassidy C. traveled down-state along with competing individuals Nick G. and Emme K. to compete in the State Championship Horse Bowl held at Michigan State University, Lansing. Horse Bowl is part of a the larger 4-H Horse Jamboree which included Judging and Hippology. Since none of us had ever experienced a state horse bowl event, we had no idea what to expect. We were all a little nervous and very excited. On April 17th, we met at the Jack's IGA parking lot to carpool into three cars and caravanned down together.
We crossed the Mackinac Bridge and everybody had to stretch and run around for a bit. Afterwards we stopped at a restaurant for lunch and then continued onward and southward. |

Playing keep away in the hotel pool with Chippewa County competitors
|
Our coach, Cathy W., had coordinated with the Menominee coach to stay in the same hotel. As it turned out, all three qualifying teams from the U.P. stayed in the same hotel. We got to know both counties a little bit playing in the pool with them on the Friday evening before the competition and on Saturday evening after. They were really nice, and I think we all had a great time hanging with them.
|
Bright and early on Saturday morning, April 18th, we headed to the MSU campus- talk about exciting! We signed in at the front desk and then where directed to the huge lecture room in Anthony Hall for a brief orientation. Nick and Emme would be playing against each other and 3 other individuals in 3 rounds. The Marquette team would play a total of 5 rounds which started 9:30 a.m., broke for a 1/2 hour lunch break, and continued until 3 p.m.
After winning the regional competition, the coach, Cathy W., and several dedicated parents dissected their studying material to build up the weak areas uncovered at the Regional’s. Hence the Marquette kids came to the State Horse Bowl competition with a wider range of knowledge and stronger playing skills.
Our county also provided 4 adult volunteers to help the game run smoothly: Jill C. read questions, Tony B. and Chris C. were scorekeepers and Jean G. agreed to step in at the last minute to be the buzzer box operator.
|

This was a really exciting trip and journey to both practice for and compete in the State Horse bowl division, and I do not nearly have the space to say all of the comments that I would like to say here, so if you would like to read more, click on the photo pages link below and I will try to tell a bit of the story above each of the images.

|
| The Team went on to win the State Horse Bowl Competition with 29 point lead above all other teams! The two Marquette junior individuals, Emme Kersey and Nick Gauthier, topped the individual competition and nearly tied for first place with Nick only one point behind Emme's score! Cassidy Calderwood, team chair four, took second place individual score over all, following one point behind the 1 st place individual from Chippewa! Teammates followed with Emily Bertucci, overall fourth, and RiLee Waller, overall sixth. Nice job all of you!!! |
The team would like to thank all their supporters especially those individuals and businesses that helped sponsor their trip down to Lansing: Marquette Community Youth Foundation, 1430th Engineer, Silver Spurs Saddle Club, Marquette County Horse Club, Upper Peninsula Horse Association, the 4-H Council, Marquette County's Michigan Extension Service, Animal Medical Center, Northern Veterinary Associates, Performance Plus Stables, Norm & Cynthia Johnson, & Cathy Ruprecht.

Equine Dentistry Demonstration Meeting
By Cammy S., U.P. Riders Reporter
On March 21, 2009, the U.P. Riders met at Performance Plus stables for an equine dentistry demonstration. Dr. Meyer is a veterinarian specializing in horses and also horse dentistry. He lives and works near Madison, Wi., but travels to provide care at different farms in Wisconsin and Michigan.
|
Dr. Meyer cleaned several horse's teeth as we watched. First the horse would be sedated with two medications in an injection. This wouldn't put the horses to sleep, but they were very groggy. They even walked a little crooked. Dr. Meyer had different tools to file down sharp points on teeth.
Katy Martin's horse, Banjo even got a tooth pulled! It was a wolf tooth, an extra tooth that would be in the way of a bit and cause pain.

Banjo's wolf tooth! |
The trailer of supplies from the Madison equine clinic also contained a digital x-ray machine and other tools. They could use the x- ray machine to take pictures and diagnose foot or other problems at the same visit. They even had an ultrasound machine to look at horse pregnancies.
|
Mr. Craig Sandmire was also there. He talked to us about equine nutrition and health. Did you know that a horse will eat 2% of its body weight in hay and grain a day?
There are also vitamins and vaccinations to make sure your horse stays healthy.

It was a lot of fun watching, listening and talking with the veterinary staff. We hope they can come back soon!

We learned to listen to the horse's stomach noises to see if he was in discomfort. |
Equine Massage and Therapy Meeting
By Cammy S., U.P. Riders Reporter
On April 29, 2009, the UP Riders met at Odelay Farms to listen to a presentation by Stevie Hartman, an equine massage and physical therapist. She began her career working with people and now uses her skills with horses.
We learned how to look for misalignment, "crookedness," in our own bodies and by looking at different horses. Some of our club members got up front and demonstrated what it looked like to walk with crooked hips. We may start a new barn dance craze! |
Stevie also showed us how to take a horses vital signs and reviewed daily care including hoof care. At the end, we got to practice horse massage and feeling for those crooked parts.
A big thank you to Molly at Odelay Farms for hosting our meeting!

By placing sticks on the point of the hips, you can see if one is higher than the other.

Ride Day at the Fairgrounds |
By Gentian W., President |
Thank you Cathy C. and Jeanie G. for the wonderful pictures!
On May 9th, a few club members that own horses met and trailered to the County Fairgrounds for a fun ride day. The weather was nasty, and some thought us desperate to go out with spurts of snow and hail and chilly temperatures. It sure was fun, though, to ride with everybody and catch up. I just wanted to share a few pictures of the fun event. Hopefully there will be many more opportunities for all of us U.P. Riders to get together and ride this summer! |

Minnesota Horse Expo

A group of U.P. Riders traveled down to the Minnesota Horse Expo on April 24, 25, 26 in lieu of the MidWest Horse Fair to experience something different. In the next issue, I will try to put some of the opinions of the members of this horse show in comparison to the MidWest Horse Fair. Also, look above the pictures in the link below for a little narrative. This was a very different fair with an AMAZING used tack sale and different presentations. There was a big coliseum just like the MidWest Horse Fair and many other small buildings slightly more spread apart with many vendors in between. Horse shopping galore for all kinds of horse stuff was spread all across the fairgrounds and concentrated in certain buildings. There was a rodeo on both the Friday and Saturday nights.
